Our story

From Backyard to Mycelium Kingdom

Hey there! We’re Justin and Melissa Wallace, the founders of Twisted Tree Nursery. Our story started in 2020—by accident. And we mean, literally.

Justin had a motocross crash that left him with several broken bones and a handful of surgeries. While recovering, he was searching for an alternative to the pharmaceuticals prescribed for his aftercare.

After some friends introduced him to microdosing, he immediately felt the positive effects. So, he dove into research, knowing he wanted to take things into his own hands.

The problem? There weren’t many great options for growing supplies back then.

The solution? Right here with us.

Our rescued tortoise friends—they are the ones who rescued us!

The love we give, it comes back.

After creating a custom substrate and testing it, Justin sent some out to a few online friends. A few weeks later, after rave reviews, DinoSoil was born!

2020

The Birth of Twisted Tree Nursery

Twisted Tree Nursery was founded with a mission to revolutionize sustainable mushroom cultivation. We introduced DinoSoil, our unique substrate crafted from nutrient-rich tortoise manure sourced directly from our on-site tortoise rescue. This innovative product quickly gained recognition for its high-yield results and commitment to eco-friendly practices, setting the foundation for our sustainable approach.

2021

Expanding with Collaborative Innovation

Following the success of DinoSoil, we launched AlpacaSoil, our first collaborative substrate created with Culture Shrooms. This blend, enhanced with alpaca manure and our proprietary MycoBoost formula, marked a significant expansion in our product line and reinforced our dedication to eco-conscious mycology.

2022

Scaling Up and With New Sustainable Offerings

Fueled by growing demand, we scaled up production and secured our products in more stores nationwide. We introduced DonkeySoil, a cold-manure blend rich in essential minerals, diversifying our sustainable offerings. This year also saw us hosting our first community event, strengthening our connection to the mycology world and laying the groundwork for future workshops and expos.

2023

Strengthening Our Community Presence

We shifted our focus to strategic collaborations and refining our production. We attended our first Counter Culture trade show, Champs, and expanded our presence at key industry events like the Entehongen Expo, Texas Mushroom Conference, and OKC Mush Festival. We completed our first warehouse, enhancing our production capabilities, and supported over 20 tortoises through DinoSoil’s success.

2024

Reaching New Heights

This year marked a significant partnership with MyceliuMatters in Los Angeles, bringing mycological education to wider audiences through events and workshops. We opened a new location in Humboldt, California, with Culture Shrooms, creating a hub for hands-on experiences. Our Mushroom Bootcamp for veterans, a nonprofit initiative, empowered participants while supporting local veteran organizations, reinforcing our dedication to wellness and community support. We also kicked off an exciting collaboration with Poppa Cap for “Poppa Cap Snack Shack Gourmet Party Foods & Favors”, bringing together food, meats, plants, and fungi in one place. This partnership, along with The Stem & Cap, is helping us expand our horizons and continue growing within the community.
