Oklahoma Mushroom Festival – October 12–13, 2024
The 2nd Annual Oklahoma Mushroom Festival was everything we hoped for and more—bigger, better, and buzzing with mushroom energy from start to finish. Hosted at the OKC Fairgrounds, Jacob Devecchio truly outdid himself in creating an unforgettable weekend packed with education, community, and celebration. This year’s theme, “Loyal to the Soil,” shined a spotlight on the critical role healthy soil plays in sustaining fungi and our food systems, setting the tone for a festival deeply rooted in both fun and purpose.
The weekend featured over 20 mushroom education classes, more than 10 hands-on workshops, live music, mushroom-based food, and an incredible variety of vendors. From cultivation demos and medicinal mushroom talks to arts, culinary showcases, and foraging tips, there was something for everyone—whether you were a first-time fungi enthusiast or a seasoned grower. Keynote speakers brought an impressive range of expertise: Angel Schatz (Central Texas Mycological Society) on community mycology and foraging, Matt Powers on regenerative practices, Joey Santore on native mushrooms and ecosystems, Andrew Reed (Mossy Creek Mushrooms) on sustainable agriculture, and Mandie Quark on medicinal mushroom cultivation.
Beyond the workshops and talks, the energy was electric thanks to pre-parties, after parties, and even a Beetlejuice-themed bash that had everyone laughing, dancing, and connecting late into the night. For us, it was also an amazing bonding experience. Me, Myceliumatters, and Omar from Culture Shrooms shared an Airbnb and got to spend quality time with friends and collaborators like Warren from Washington Mushrooms, OHMS Collective, Poo God, Boomer Shroomer, Basidium Equilibrium, Lady Hyphae, David Poplin, and many more.
It’s hard to capture just how much the Oklahoma Mushroom Festival has grown in only its second year. It was more than just a celebration of fungi—it was a celebration of the people, passion, and shared vision that make this community so special. We left inspired, connected, and already counting down the days until next year.
