Mushroom Boot Camp: The Day Twisted Tree Nursery Came Alive

Mushroom Boot Camp – June 8th, 2024

This one… this was the big one. The one that will always have its own chapter in Twisted Tree history. On June 8th, 2024, we opened our gates for the very first time and hosted Mushroom Boot Camp — a limited-ticket event originally planned as a by veterans for veterans gathering. But somewhere along the way, it turned into something even bigger — a day that pulled in people from all walks of life, all united by a love for mushrooms, community, and connection.

From the second people started arriving, you could feel it — that buzz in the air that told us this was going to be special. We had four back-to-back workshops led by some of the best veteran educators in the industry. James from Performance Fungi kicked things off with a deep dive into dosing, extraction, and ingestion methods. Meddling Mushroom followed with an inoculation and substrate demo, plus agar and liquid culture techniques. Mycotrophic brought the mind-body-spirit connection full circle with a full cultivation start-to-finish walkthrough. And closing out the day of education, Colin Wells took the mic for his talk, Laughter Under Fire. His raw, unfiltered story about navigating the VA system, overcoming addiction, and creating Veterans Walk and Talk hit everyone right in the heart.

The day wasn’t just about education — it was about experience. We had a vendor row stacked with some of the most incredible brands and makers: Culture Shrooms × Myceliumatters kept the hydration station flowing, West Coast Gold Caps × Mush Slush served up icy treats, and Poppa Cap debuted the Poppa Cap Snack Shack (those sliders were gone in minutes). Rematch Upcycled Gis, Ohms Collective, Myco Oakland, Myco Thumb, Lacuna Medicinals, Fruit Bag Company × Mushiiz, EZOTERIKA × Aurora Lake, and Agar Boi × Myco Liner brought everything from art to cultivation gear to handmade goods.

And just when people thought the day was winding down, Poppa Cap and Kombat on the Keys took the stage, performing their new song Anyday along with unreleased tracks that had everyone moving.

Everywhere you looked, something was happening. A 9-foot interactive paint wall stood in the center of it all — buckets of paint ready for anyone to leave their mark. (That wall now hangs framed in our warehouse as a permanent reminder of the day.) Kids ran between workshops and animal encounters, meeting our tortoises and even getting up close with a visiting alpaca who happily wandered the crowd making new friends. Tucked away in the trees, the mush hangout zone — an old truck converted into a cozy lounge — stayed full of people sharing drinks and stories.

As the sun set, the energy shifted into something even more magical. Music played, fire dancers lit up the night, and a small group of us stayed by the campfire talking and laughing until the sky turned light again. It wasn’t perfect — no first event is — but it was real, it was full of love, and it was ours.

The best part? Together, we raised and donated $1,000 to Veterans Walk and Talk. That’s the kind of impact that lasts longer than any one event.
